Town Down Drews to Return to the Top

Sat 24 Aug

Leicester St Andrew's 0-4 Nuneaton Town

(Daly 3, Mullan 58, Johnson 75, Currithers 77)

Nuneaton Town travelled to Leicester St Andrew's on Saturday afternoon looking to return to winning ways following a first defeat of the season on Tuesday. New signing Liam Stringer made his debut at left back, while Liam Daly made a return to the side.

3 minutes in, Daly made an immediate impact, as a corner was won, and he rose above his defender to head the ball goal-wards from Trevor Edwards’ cross (1-0).

It could have been 2 just 3 minutes later. Daly was at it again but his header, although on target, was straight at the keeper.

With the Drews struggling to deal with the 6 ft 6 defender, Daly headed another corner just wide on 15 mins, after Cody Mullan weaved into space in the box and had his shot deflected just over the bar.

The Town were the better side for much of the half, but struggled to put their chances away. A cross into the box from the left on the half hour mark found Harry Jackson's toe, but he was unlucky to direct the ball straight at the keeper, who saved at point blank range.

Nuneaton continued to pepper the Drews' goal, with Stuart Hendrie curling over on 33 minutes. James Spruce and Loyiso Recci both had chances blocked two minutes later.

The final chance of the half fell to James Spruce, who managed to capitalise on a slip to tackle the ball from the Drews’ keeper. However, with several defenders running back to prevent Spruce scoring, he was unable to get the ball over the line despite some trickery to create some space.

The second half kicked off evenly at first, but as with games previously, the subs began to make an impact.

On 55 minutes, Harry Jackson and Keenah Rosser were replaced by Danico Johnson and Justin Marsden. 3 minutes later, it was 2, as a cross from the left was headed away straight to Cody Mullan, who decided to have a go from the edge of the box and fired it into the top corner with a great strike (2-0).

The Drews best chance so far came on 70 minutes as a couple of attempts on target were cleared away - the second one off the line. 3 minutes later, James Harrison replaced James Spruce and again it led to goals.

On 75 minutes, Danico Johnson beat the keeper to a pass and was able to stay composed enough to roll the ball home (3-0).

No sooner had the game kicked off again, then Town added a 4th. James Harrison got away down the right and his pass across the box found Corey Currithers to slot the ball home (4-0).

Harrison Bruce replaced Stuart Hendrie on 79 minutes, and it should have lead to another goal. Justin Marsden dinked a lovely pass over to James Harrison, but he chose to lob the keeper, and it landed on the roof of the net.

Alfie Birta replaced Trevor Edwards on 83 minutes as Nuneaton saved players for Monday’s game, and managed to see the clean sheet out despite one last chance for Drews that somehow didn't cross the line.

Town return to winning ways, and the top of the table with some rivals in FA Vase action, ahead of the Nuneaton derby on Bank Holiday Monday with Nuneaton Griff at The Oval.
