On Tuesday night Nuneaton Town host Lichfield City in the Midland Football League Cup.
Unusually, Nuneaton go into the game as underdogs, as it's first in Division 1 vs first in the Premier Division. Fans (and Louis Baker..) will remember the FA Cup qualifying game between Lichfield and Nuneaton Borough on 4th September 2021 which was streamed on the BBC Sport website, in which Baker played alongside his father Carl, and scored the second of a 3-1 win.
The current Lichfield City FC were formed in 1970 as Lichfield FC, and joined the West Midlands Regional League Division 1 in 1976. After relegation to Division 2 in 1986, they returned to Division 1 in 1990. They added City to their name in 1994, and were promoted to the Premier Division a year later. Unfortunately they withdrew from Saturday football the following year.
Lichfield City returned in 2008, joining the Midland Combination Division 3, taking just 4 seasons to earn 3 promotions to the Premier Division. After the league's merger with the Midland Alliance to form the Midland League, Lichfield spent 7 seasons in Division 1, where Nuneaton Town find themselves now. Lichfield were promoted to the Premier Division in 2021 based on a points per game ratio during the abandoned Covid-19 seasons. They won back to back JW Hunt Cups in 2023 and 2024, also reaching the play offs in the 2023-24 season, losing in the final to Darlaston Town.
Lichfield are a point clear at the top of the Midland League Premier Division with 12 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats from their 17 matches, and beat Saffron Dynamo 2-1 in the previous round. Nuneaton Town beat Birstall United by the same scoreline in their previous round match.
A great contest is expected and it will be a good indicator as to how far the fledgling Nuneaton Town FC has come in its first 6 months of football.
