On Saturday, Nuneaton Town FC face Birstall United at the Oval. This will be the third time that the sides have faced each other this season. Back in October, Town beat Birstall 2-1 away in the MFL Cup 2nd round thanks to goals from Louis Baker. Last month, the sides met in the league at Meadow Lane with Town again picking up a 2-1 away, this time through goals from Loyiso Recci and Declan Somel.
Nuneaton Town sit top and are in rich vein of form being unbeaten in the last ten league games picking up nine wins. Birstall United remain in 15th place from the previous encounter, and after two wins against Bilston and Paget, they lost 4-1 at home against 4th placed Coton Green in their most recent game. With only thirteen games left and sitting 5 points clear the top, Town will be looking to pick up another three points at the Oval and continue in the right direction.
Birstall United were established back in 1961 and initially played Sunday league football in the Leicestershire & District leagues. After three championship wins, they switched to Saturday football and competed int he Leicestershire Mutual League and also had a lot of success in the late 60's/early 70's. Birstall remained in the Leicestershire leagues until the 2016 when they were promoted into the East Midlands Counties League (now United Counties League), and at the start of this season transferred into the Midland Football League. Their best FA Vase performance came in the 1997/98 season when they reached the fourth round.
