It's another break from league action this Tuesday as Nuneaton Town make the short-ish trip to north east Leicester to face Birstall United for the first ever time, in the Midland League Cup 2nd Round.

United were founded in 1961 as a Sunday League team before joining the Leicester Mutual League as a Saturday team in 1964. After working their way through the divisions they joined the Leicestershire Senior League in 1976. They stayed there until reaching step 6 in 2016 after winning the LSL Premier Division.

After spending 2 seasons in the East Midlands Counties League, they transferred to the United Counties League before, being transferred along with several other Leicester based clubs, into the Midland League Division 1 for the 2024-25 season.

They have been winners of the Leicestershire and Rutland Senior Cup on 3 occasions in the late 90s, and reached the FA Vase 4th round in this time.

Birstall United currently sit 16th in Nuneaton's league, with 4 wins, 5 draws and 8 defeats from 17 games. While Nuneaton will be looking to maintain a record of just one defeat in all competitions this season.

Directions from Nuneaton town centre:

Take the A47 towards Hinckley via the Long Shoot, then follow the A5 towards the M69, joining it towards Leicester. At the end of the M69 take the slip road to the M1 north. Leave the M1 north at Junction 21A on the A46 (Leicester North/Newark). Follow this until the junction with the A6 (Loughborough/Leicester). Take the slip road but go straight on at the roundabout to go back onto the A46. Take the slip road on the left onto Wanlip, then turn right onto Fillingate. Go left at the roundabout to stay on Fillingate, which becomes Rectory Road round the first corner, then Wanlip Lane after another. After 1 mile turn left at the One Stop onto Lambourne Road. Turn left onto Blenheim Road then immediately right onto Meadow Lane. The ground is down the road on the left. Parking is minimal so you may have to walk from surrounding roads.

(26 miles, approx 45 mins)

Public Transport:

Recommended journey is the 17:28 train from Nuneaton to Leicester arriving 17:53. Go across the road from the station to catch the 22A towards Barrow-upon-Soar. This will reach Lambourne Road at 18:38, and then it's a short walk to the ground as above.

A later option is the 17:51 train to Leicester, arriving at 18:16, the 31A bus opposite to Haymarket at 18:24, taking 4 minutes. Then walk to St Margaret's Bus Station and take the 2X to Loughborough at 18:40 arriving at Beechfield Avenue at 18:49. Then it's an 18 minute walk to the ground through the housing estate.

Returning: go out of the housing estate via Blenheim Road, Lambourne Road, Wanlip Lane, Wanlip Avenue and Sibson Road onto Loughborough Road. Pick up a Skylink Derby bus at 22:11 from Greengate Lane, stopping at St Margaret's, then a 48 going past the train station. There is a train at 22:56 going to Birmingham New Street stopping at Nuneaton at 23:15.
