Coalville Town v Nuneaton Town Sat 13 Jul 12:00 Match Report

Coalville Town and Nuneaton Borough fans would not have predicted this time last year of the rollercoaster that both clubs would go through, which culminated in both sides withdrawing from the Southern League Premier Central and being relegated to Step 6, Nuneaton Borough fans of course forming Nuneaton Town in the process.

It was perhaps fitting then that the two sides should meet in a friendly given their similar last 12 months. Coalville who unlike Nuneaton still have their home ground hosted the match at midday due to the Nuneaton Town launch party following.

The match had more action than the stalemate in Melton Mowbray, Chandler Pegg almost scoring within 2 minutes as his shot was tipped wide for a corner, Liam Daly placing the header from the corner on target but the Coalville keeper held well. On 15 minutes Pegg nearly scored again as a great cross into the box was met by him but the keeper blocked.

4 minutes later though on 19 it was Pegg who put in a great through ball to Declan Somel and he made no mistake in slotting the ball under the keeper for the opening goal.

On 22 minutes Boro nearly had a 2nd from pinball inside the penalty box but Coalville bodies on the line prevented the ball from crossing it for a 2nd.

The dangerous Daly got another header from a corner on target on 39 minutes but the keeper held after a brief juggle.

Nuneatons trialist keeper made a great save at the other end to keep Coalville out on 42 minutes as they got a shot on target.

Half time: Coalville Town 0-1 Nuneaton Town

Five changes were made at half time as the subs were given chances to get minutes under their belts. One of them Louis Baker, took just 2 minutes to get on the scoresheet, as a miskick in the box by Currithers fell straight to Baker who slotted home for 2-0.

Boro were now dictating the play, Corey Currithers drawing a good save from a Justin Marsden through ball. On 56 minutes Marsden was involved again as he chased a header away in the box and got to the ball just before the defender who brought him down for a penalty. Romario Martin sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-0.

Further subs were made, Nuneaton held on for the last half an hour to their second successive clean sheet to take their first win of pre-season, an encouraging result against a team who will also be expected to do well at Step 6 next season.
